Illinois Window Tint Law – A Simple Guide

Many customers ask, “What’s legal in Illinois?” This page is a simple overview of the current Illinois window tint rules for most passenger vehicles. It is not legal advice, and tint laws can change, so always verify with official State of Illinois resources or law enforcement if you have questions.

What Is VLT?

Tint darkness is measured by VLT – Visible Light Transmission, which is the percentage of light that passes through the glass and film together. A higher number (like 70%) is lighter. A lower number (like 20%) is darker.

Basic Illinois Tint Rules (Passenger Cars / Sedans)

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed only on the top 6 inches.
  • Front side windows: Must allow at least 35% VLT.
  • Back side windows: Must allow at least 35% VLT.
  • Rear window: Must allow at least 35% VLT.

Basic Illinois Tint Rules (SUVs, Vans, and Trucks)

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed only on the top 6 inches.
  • Front side windows: Must allow at least 50% VLT.
  • Back side windows: Any darkness allowed.
  • Rear window: Any darkness allowed.

Other Important Points

  • If the rear window is tinted, dual side mirrors are required.
  • Tint is required to be non-reflective in Illinois.
  • There is typically a small allowed variance in VLT to account for meter and glass differences.
  • Medical exemptions may be available in special cases; these are handled through the State of Illinois.

Violations of the window tint law can result in fines and you may be required to remove illegal film. Because the law can change, it’s always a good idea to confirm current requirements with official sources.
